When a program tells you to stop a set "2 reps shy of failure," it is speaking the language of Reps in Reserve. RIR is the most intuitive way to describe effort in the gym, because it answers the only question that really matters at the end of a hard set: how many more could you have done? Master it and you gain a dial for effort that keeps you progressing without burying yourself in fatigue.
RIR is the mirror of RPE: one counts the reps you left, the other rates how hard the set felt, and they carry identical information. Read whichever framing lands faster for you, then read the other, because programs and coaches use both.
What RIR Means
Reps in Reserve is exactly what it sounds like: the number of additional repetitions you could have completed with good form before hitting failure. Finish a set of 10 and you honestly had 2 more in the tank, that was 2 RIR. Grind to the point where a single extra rep was impossible, that was 0 RIR, true muscular failure.
RIR is a measure of proximity to failure, and proximity to failure is one of the central levers of muscle growth. A set taken close to failure recruits the high-threshold motor units that drive adaptation. A set left far from failure, say 5 or 6 RIR, is mostly warm-up-quality work. A fixed percentage of your max cannot know that you slept badly, skipped lunch, or are three sets deep into a fatiguing session. RIR can. It is a tool for autoregulation, adjusting the day's effort to the body that showed up.
Say your program calls for "3 sets, 2 RIR." On a strong day, hitting 2 RIR might mean 185x10. On a rough day, that same 2 RIR might arrive at 185x8, or at 175x10. Either way you got the intended stimulus: a set stopped two reps from failure. The weight and reps flex; the effort stays anchored. That is what keeps a program honest across the ups and downs of real life.
RIR also protects your recovery. Prescribing an RIR floor (say, "never below 1 RIR on your main compounds") caps how often you touch true failure, which is where fatigue cost spikes and technique degrades. You get the growth stimulus of hard sets without the deep recovery debt of grinding every one to zero.
How to Estimate RIR Accurately
RIR is only useful if your estimate is honest, and this is a skill that improves with practice. A few principles:
Judge from bar speed. As you approach failure, your reps slow down involuntarily even when you are pushing maximally. When a rep grinds noticeably slower than the one before it, you are within 1-2 of failure. Learning to read that slowdown is the single best RIR calibration tool.
Occasionally test yourself. Now and then, take a set you think is 2 RIR all the way to true failure and count the extra reps. Most people, especially newer lifters, discover they had 4 or 5 left when they guessed 2. That reality check recalibrates your internal scale.

Treating RIR as fixed across a workout
The same load gets closer to failure as a session wears on. 185x10 at 2 RIR early might be 0 RIR by your fourth set. Expect your reps at a target RIR to drop across sets, that is fatigue doing its job, not you getting weaker.
Ignoring RIR on isolation work
People reserve RIR for the big lifts and thrash their curls and lateral raises to failure randomly. Isolation movements benefit from the same effort control; they just tolerate a bit closer-to-failure work because the systemic cost is lower.
